About the Theater

This Cathedral Gothic Theater is one of the most beautiful rooms in the Scottish Rite.

It was originally designed to provide a venue for the conferral of the Scottish Rite Degrees. Although this remains an important use, this beautiful venue is used for a variety of productions including plays, entertainment, meetings, and, weddings. We hope that its usage affords the public the opportunityto enjoy one of the most beautiful venues in the mid-west.

The woodwork, panels and trim are Russian curly oak.  The trusses and woodwork were stained in dark fumer oak.  The wall panels are embellished in Gothic motif and are shaded from dark near the floor to lighter towards the ceiling, symbolic of the enlightening teachings of Scottish Rite Masonry.

The carvings on the trusses and woodwork were created by the sons of Anton Lang. Lang was famous for playing the part of Christ in the passion play at Oberammergau, Germany. The four side robust cherubs on each side of the theater and the two on either side of the stage holding plaques to their breasts are symbolic references to the Ten Commandments.

The stage is 33 feet deep and 84 feet wide, and it is of traditional proscenium theater style.  The stage provides a wonderful setting for plays, concerts and many other programs.  Until five (5) years ago, the lighting for the stage productions was provided by a light board, which was state of the art at the time of its installation in 1928.  Although it has been replaced by a state of the art computerized lighting system, it still is in its original place back stage.  An integral part of modern stage is the sound amplification system.  Thanks to the very generous assistance of the Christel DeHaan Family Foundation a new state of the art speaker system was installed.  This has provided distinct, controlled sound to every part of this beautiful theater.

The theater has a permanent seating capacity of 1040, and another 112 and approximately 15 wheel chair or patron assisted space available.  Please sit back down and enjoy the show.
